WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 AA
Does WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 apply? Both matter. Many laws reference WCAG 2.1 AA today (EN 301 549 V3.2.1, ADA Title II), while WCAG 2.2 is the current version and the expected next step (EN 301 549 V4.1.1 in 2026). Since WCAG 2.2 fully includes 2.1, building to WCAG 2.2 AA is the practical target. All versions share four principles: perceivable, operable, understandable, robust.
questions
Frequently asked
Why AA and not AAA?
AA is the legally relevant level and fully achievable in practice. AAA includes criteria not sensible or reachable for all content.
Does meeting AA guarantee compliance?
WCAG 2.2 AA is the recognized benchmark and the best demonstrable protection. No one can give a blanket legal guarantee, so clean, documented implementation matters.
Do I need to move to 2.2 now?
Sensibly yes. Since 2.2 includes 2.1 and standards are aligning to it, building to 2.2 AA avoids later rework.
